Really surprising. I was only expecting to tolerate this album but it turns out I really liked it. Strong vocals, catchy melodies, what’s not to like?

What excites me the most about Sarah McLachlan’s music is how she juxtaposes lyrics with music. She evokes emotions from her highly poetic lyrics and copies those emotions in the accompanying music. I do not find her to be focused on catchy melodies or highly technical performances. This does not mean she is not a talented musician, rather that it means that she employs a more story-telling approach that I really value. My favourite song on this album is Path of Thorns, but I really think they are all excellent. What excites me the most about Sarah McLachlan’s music is how she juxtaposes lyrics with music.
