An impressive album. To me, the whole album had a very strong feeling of purpose. Everything felt like it had a point. Nirvana knew what they were doing. Even though I’ve listened to 90-odd albums by now, I feel as if it sounds totally different from everything else I’ve listened to so far. The playing was surprisingly great but the lyrics were definitely difficult to make out. Comparing it to some of the other grunge on the list, It’s better than all of it, I think.

I feel conflicted rating this as high as it may end up getting because of how controversial the cover is. It is iconic.

What does one say about perfection? What does one say about a sound that captures a time like this album does? I know that bringing grunge to the mainstream was not Nirvana’s intent, but I think the mainstream was hungry for something new and ready for this. I have loved Nirvana for such a long time. I love Kurt’s gravelly voice, I love the distorted guitar, I love the vibe. I don’t get any strong connected message from all of these songs, but I feel that punk heartbeat at the core, that “I don’t care what you think about me”. It feels like power.

I feel like this is one of the most controversial album covers of all time. I know that the baby on the cover grew up to sue Nirvana. I am not sure why. I bet if he never told anyone, no one would have known? But maybe he wanted a cut of the profits? I do think the message in the image is powerful. Purity chasing money, likely much like the band felt moving from their independent beginnings to a record label.
