Alright music. I obviously find myself comparing it to “Dookie”... Sadly, Saviors is nowhere as amazing as dookie.

I have been listening to Green Day since Dookie came out. I own many of their albums. This is my first listen to Saviors and I am shocked by how much it sounds like 21st Century Breakdown. I do not expect a band to reinvent themselves every time they record something new - but I also expect to hear something new within the familiar. American Idiot was such a commercial, critical, and (in my humble opinion) musical success and a big departure from their more punk heavy roots, that Green Day chronology has a pre- and post-American Idiot sound. I have a hard time placing Saviors in the Pop-Punk category (pre-American Idiot sound) and I think it leans harder on alt-rock or straight up rock carrying on with the post-American Idiot sound. I do think their messaging has been clear since American Idiot. That message is that Green Day is trying to bring attention to the problems with modern day American ideals. However, because Green Day now clearly benefits from the system they critique, that messaging doesn’t land with the same impact. I still enjoy the album but their message feels somewhat clouded by the realities of their lifestyle.
