If you couldn’t tell by now, I’m a big Zappa fan as well as a big Captain Beefheart fan, so the collaboration album between the two is a slam dunk. Cucamonga surprised me with all of the callbacks to Zappa’s earlier albums (maybe just Nanook but it felt like more) and I was amazed that Beefheart’s weird spoken word music got put on the album. Crazy harmonica playing too. In other news, the opening monologue on muffin man was one of the funniest things ever when I first heard it.

I do believe the stately soul patch is underappreciated and often worn by savants. And while I would also attest that Frank Zappa is exactly the sort of fellow to sport one, I don’t think this particular piece of facial hair can save the album cover from being boring.
